KYLE

The Christmas decorations are still hanging in the streets and Milan looks so magical lately. I’ve been here for a couple of months now and the fact that people are still on vacation probably makes the city more enjoyable for me.

My name is Kyle, I’m 20 and I recently moved here from Dun Laoghaire, a small town south from Dublin. I came here to study communications and connect with new people and so far, so good! I’m really enjoying the courses and I’ve made quite a few friends. It did take me a bit though, I won’t lie. Probably I was too caught in the stereotype that Italian people are warm and welcoming, so I was waiting for someone to talk to me. I did fix that thought real quick on the second day and I started talking to my classmates and they were all very nice to me.

Now that I’m here I can really broaden my horizons, I never felt like Dun Laoghaire was the place for me and now I have the chance to do new things, I can make new friends and if I’m lucky even find love. For now, the only love I found is my love for pizza.

It’s a tormented love. Kind of like Romeo and Juliet, they want to be together all the time, but they can’t. Well I love pizza, but I can’t eat it all the time because I would become a full-blown whale.

Anyways, one thing I’m struggling with here is the language, I’m not fluent at all in Italian and fortunately most people I talk to know English otherwise it’d be a nightmare. Back in October when I got here I was roaming around and I got lost. My connection was crappy therefore I couldn’t just whip out my phone and find my way back. So, I gathered the few Italian words I knew and asked random people for instructions on how to get to the metro and they all seemed to ignore me. Maybe I butchered it completely, maybe they thought I was a weird crazy person or maybe it’s just the way people are here. The hectic lifestyle that they conduce shocked me at first and it took me a bit to get used to it. Everyone seems to be running all the time which is something I did see in Dublin as well but not with the same intensity.

For the first two months here, all I did was stay in university with my new friends, we did also roam around a bit, but I don’t think I’ve seen much of this city. What’s weird is that many people that live here don’t even know where to go. I’m sure there is much to explore, I just need to find someone who’s willing to be my guide. I want to be the Irish Dora the Explorer, all I need is a sidekick like Boots.

I have a roommate and she’s a cool chick but she doesn’t seem to enjoy going around that much. I do tend to stay inside quite a lot myself but I swore I wouldn’t do that here. I am staying in tonight though because I want to catch up with American Horror Story, I’ve been binge watching it lately and it’s so good UGH. It might be one of my favourite series as of late.

Speaking of favourites, every week I usually write down a list of my favourite things. I think it’s a good way for me to share my interests with the world and maybe broaden your horizons too!

Favourite artist/album of the week: Earlier this week I was scrolling through twitter when I saw a video of a girl singing. I opened it and I was blown away, so I decided to check her out and I saw that she released an album in early October. Her name is Sabrina Claudio and the album is called About Time. It’s an amazing project, I really recommend it for people that like R&B and Soul. Her voice is very soft and sexy and almost every song gives me chills.Sabrina Claudio

Favourite song of the week: My favourite song this week is Four Five Seconds featuring Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. I know it’s kind of an oldie, but I’ve dug it out of my music library and I’ve been listening to it nonstop.

Favourite series of the week: American Horror Story. Case closed. Nothing more to say. JUST WATCH IT AND THEN WE CAN TALK.

It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 8 PM. Here is the link for further info.
